Grounding

My photographs record the everyday beauty of often-disparaged spaces, such as sidewalks, front lawns, and gravel driveways, closely inspected. They represent the most basic and important moments in life. The light is subdued, so as not to distract from the object at hand, or become its own character separate from the subject of the photograph. The square format is, like the ordinary terrain I am studying, uniform and methodical. And their relatively small (12" x 12") size gives them a personal quality that invites the viewer to inspect them closely and reflect upon them. Further, as other important things are often photographed in order to honor them, these photographs commemorate the mundane as important and not to be forgotten.
